Nikka Distillery, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, is a cornerstone of Japanese whisky craftsmanship and tradition. Established in 1934, Nikka was born from Taketsuru's ambition to create authentic Scotch-style whisky in Japan. Taketsuru, who studied the art of whisky making in Scotland, brought back not only knowledge but also a Scottish wife, Rita, to Hokkaido, where he founded the Yoichi Distillery. This location was chosen for its climate and terrain similarities to Scotland, ideal for producing whisky with a distinctive character.
Nikka expanded with the opening of the Miyagikyo Distillery in 1969, located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. This facility complements Yoichi's offerings by producing whisky with a softer, more delicate profile, using pot stills designed by Taketsuru himself. Both distilleries continue to uphold Taketsuru's legacy of craftsmanship, combining traditional Scottish techniques with Japanese precision and innovation.
The whiskies produced at Nikka Distillery are celebrated worldwide for their exceptional quality and diverse flavour profiles. From the rich, peaty expressions of Yoichi to the elegant, fruity notes of Miyagikyo, Nikka whiskies cater to a wide range of palates and preferences. Each expression undergoes meticulous aging in a variety of cask types, including ex-bourbon, sherry, and Japanese oak, contributing to the complexity and depth for which Nikka whiskies are renowned.
Beyond whisky, Nikka Distillery also produces a range of other spirits, including gin, vodka, and brandy, all crafted with the same dedication to quality and attention to detail. Nikka's commitment to excellence has earned it numerous awards and accolades, solidifying its reputation as one of Japan's foremost distilleries and a global leader in the whisky industry.
